Hi!  I'm Carla Jansen!

I created Preschool Powol Packets to help parents, teachers, and other caregivers provide a quality preschool experience for their children. It has since grown even bigger than just that!

If you're new here, you might want to start in the FREE tab for printable resources, the SCIENCE tab for fun science projects, or the THEMES tab for themed activities (my favorite way to teach kids is using themes they're interested in)! We also have a lot of fun with BOOK-BASED ACTIVITIES and STEM PROJECTS!   In the STORE tab you can find even more teaching tools for a small fee.  This helps me maintain the blog and purchase school supplies for my own children. As my kids grew I started posting activities for older kids here, but I realized they needed their own "home," so I started TEACHING WITHOUT CHAIRS to house activities and resources for kids over about seven years old.

I am a certified teacher in both Virginia and Texas and a certified National Geographic Educator. I have a BS in Biology Composite Teaching, an MA in Science Education (with an emphasis in geosciences), additional certifications for early childhood and elementary school, over seven years science teaching experience, and over 20 years of experience working with young children.  In addition to teaching public school, I have also run a home-based daycare and now focus on homeschooling my five children!

I love to teach and often enjoy teaching homeschool groups, co-ops, and my kids' friends!  Teaching my own children is one of my little joys in life!  I also love running, reading, piano, science, genealogy, brownies, trying new things, and traveling...though traveling with kids is a whole new game!

Update: "Elephant toothpaste" is a science experiment that I used to do with my high school students.  It is a strong multi-sensory demonstration that goes great with a lot of chemistry concepts. Kind Words Sensory Lesson Friendship Activity

This sensory lesson includes a kindness activity for kids that is short and sweet,  and makes teaching kindness a beautiful thing! Learning to use kind words with our friends is one friendship lesson that I think we can never cover enough...kids always need reminding (sometimes adults do too)!  You will need these simple supplies for the kindness activity: cotton balls, course sandpaper, cup, Should I Share My Ice-Cream by Mo Willems Directly teaching good friendship skills, like using kind words, serves two purposes: 1- You can refer to the lesson when someone forgets or needs reminding, and 2- These skills are not intuitive for all preschoolers. This is a perfect age to bring empathy and kindness to their attention and help them cultivate these skills! Crazy Cool Giraffe Science Experiment

Do you know what color giraffe skin is? Today we're using a capillary action science experiment to make our own giraffe skins in this fun giraffe science experiment project! Fun Spot  Giraffe  Fact:  There are four different giraffe species:  the Masai Giraffe, the Rothschild Giraffe, the Somali Giraffe, and the Nigerian Giraffe.  Each has its own unique spot pattern.  Even more unique, every single individual giraffe has a different spot design.  Just like fingerprints on people and stripes on a zebra, spots on a giraffe are unique in every individual!
