Reading & Fine Motor Skills With LeapFrog Epic!

Image
Have you seen the new LeapFrog Epic?  It is an amazing hands-on, convenient, portable, fun, and intuitive way for your kiddos to practice reading and fine motor skills! The Epic is LeapFrog's newest tablet!  It is designed for children 3-9, has 16 GB memory, connects to wifi, comes with a 2 MP camera, stylus, 7-inch screen, and can download dozens of apps!  I love  how all my kids, 2-8 years old, can use it independently and safely.  There aren't any in-ap purchases or 3rd party ads. There are dozens of games that teach reading skills, from preschool to elementary!  One of my daughter's favorites is a lot like Mad Libs.  In StorySpinner, the game records her voice providing different nouns, verbs, and other parts of speech, then plays them as it reads aloud a story (with her voice for the requested words!  My younger preschooler was identifying letters as she collected gems in Run Pet Run just tonight! A Mother's Christmas Treat

Image
This time of year tends to make me more reflective than normal.  And since we have a newborn that wakes up at night I have more time than normal to reflect.  I hope you enjoy this and that you've all had and are having a wonderful holiday season!  And if this really isn't your sort of thing, don't worry--I'll be back to posting printables, activities, and experiments like normal on Saturday! A Mother's Christmas Treat by Carla Jansen at Preschool Powol Packets to my children Two days till Christmas and 2,000 things to do, But I find myself at midnight in the dark, thinking about you. I hear the Christmas music and see the twinkling light-- Its shadows dance across the wall, interrupting the night. My thoughts dance with them, spanning space and time-- They cover years and tears, ignoring ordered rhyme. I remember the day that you were born, the gift you were to me, More beautiful and more precious than any gift under any tree. I would

Leap TV Review: Active Learning & Fun from LeapFrog!

Image
Would you love a game system that is tons of fun, educational (specifically for kids 3-8 years old), and keeps your kiddos moving while they play?  Then you will love LeapFrog's Leap TV! One of our biggest challenges during cold, wet weather is finding engaging educational ways to use the TONS of energy that comes bursting out of my children all day long .  They like to play computer games, but if they spend very much time holding still, they start to go stir-crazy.  This is the biggest reason I love the LeapTV: You need to be standing and moving to play the games! As a LeapFrog Mom Ambassador, I received a Leap TV to review and share as I see fit.  And I'm excited to tell you...we all love it!!  My kids were so excited about it that they pulled it out of its packaging without me!  They have loved everything LeapFrog has made, and could not wait to try out a game system with their favorite characters!  And me?  I love it too!  Here are my top 6 favorite aspects of the

Quick STEM Science Experiment: DIY Lava Lamp

Image
This classic science experiment can easily be made into a STEM activity by simply adding a few fun components! It's the perfect science project to grab and hold a child's attention. To make the typical lava lamp, simply fill a vase or other bottle about 2/3 full with oil.  Carefully add water until you only have about 2 inches of air space left in the vase.  Add 4-6 drops of food coloring.  You should now have a layer of oil and a layer of colored water.  To make the lava lamp (and mix the layers in a super cool, bubbly way), break an alka-seltzer tablet into quarters and drop them in!  When the bubbles die down, add more alka-seltzer! The science behind the alka-seltzer tablet is straight forward: it is another case of carbon dioxide making bubbles (just like the more common vinegar and baking soda experiments).  Alka-seltzer has dry sodium bicarbonate (a base) and citric acid.  When the tablet dissolves in water, the two chemicals mix together and make carbon di
