Comet Model - a Space Themed Dry Ice Science Experiment

Image
When we saw that dry ice can freeze dirt during our volcano science experiment , we knew that creating a comet model needed to be on our list of dry ice science projects ! Plus, we love astronomy for kids and do a space theme one or two times a year! Before we made the actual comet model we talked about what comets are made of. I told the kids that we know comets have rocks, dust, frozen water, frozen carbon dioxide (and other gasses), and organic material (like amino acids and nucleic acids). I asked them to think of what they wanted to represent a comet and we would go outside and build our comet model. Here's what they came up with: What are comets made of?  - What we used in our model! rocks - rocks dust - dirt frozen water - water (the dry ice would freeze it) frozen gasses - dry ice (frozen carbon dioxide) organic matter - crushed leaves  organic matter - vinegar organic matter - any other random thing they could find  (I think I saw an ora

Candle & Dry Ice Science Experiments

Image
Dry ice + fire = two of my kids all time favorite things to use in science experiments! (They have a thing for anything with the potential to explode or fizz.) So, of course, a science project with candles and dry ice was going to be instantly popular. The cool thing about this experiment is that it is SO easy to set up (except for the buying dry ice part). But once you have the dry ice, you just need to grab a candle and cup. And if you're anything like us, those are always available! Simple Supplies: * dry ice * candle * cup * lighter Easy How To: You may be familiar with the classic candle experiment where you cover a lit candle and watch the flame go out. Fire needs oxygen to burn. If you take away that oxygen, the fire will go out. This experiment is a fun variation on that cover-the-candle experiment. 1- Set the candle inside the cup and light it. Review fire's need for oxygen. 2- Place a piece of dry ice inside the cup near

Awesome Dry Ice Science Experiments

Dry ice experiments are one of my personal favorite types of science experiments...probably because my preschoolers (and other kids too!) are always so impressed and amazed with these fun science projects! Even my 1-year old was delighted  as she watched our dry ice bubbles grow out of a graduated cylinder! Because we love dry ice experiments so much, I've got a little creative in coming up with new things to do with dry ice. We've used it for lessons on penguins, space, Halloween, and more! The experiments are, of course, everyone's favorites, so I decided to share them with y'all! These experiments with dry ice are perfect for homeschool, classrooms, or after-school or weekend fun. They also work great for parties, boredom busters, and holiday entertainment! Kids in preschool, elementary school, high school, and even adults have loads of fun experimenting with dry ice--just remember to never touch it directly and always supervise your kids to keep them sa
