Craft Stick Airplane

Making these little airplanes was as much fun as playing with them--and each child's airplane was wonderfully personalized!

We talked about inventions with our airplanes and based them (loosely) on the Wright brothers first successful models.  You can use them in a transportation unit, a history unit, or just for fun!

Simple Supplies:

  • 8 1/2 craft sticks
  • glue (I used hot glue, but you can use Elmer's if you and your children are more patient!)
  • paint

Easy How-To:

1- Assemble the airplane.  Follow the directions in the image below:

2- At this point, several of our airplanes disappeared outside for some serious sand-box acrobatics.  They came back looking like the first image in this post!  The kids had a blast, and the planes were easy enough to dust off and paint.  Of course, I gave the children the option of painting or leaving them as they were, and they all wanted paint.  So, the next step is to paint them!  I let them work on a paper plate, but if your work surface is safe the plate is not necessary.

That's it!  Enjoy your masterpieces!

Happy educating!
Carla

I love it! Hopefully I can get my little guy into it too! May be a good dad project.
Sarah, it would be so fun for a kid to do with his dad! The hot gluing part only took about five minutes...even with the kids helping! ;)
Pinned it! I love the idea of a Father's Day Activity. I"m going to send home the craft sticks and your instruction photo for my daycare kids Father's Day gift. A project for them to do together! what a great idea.
Thanks Carla!!
Jana, thanks for pinning it!! I'm so excited that you'll be using it for Father's Day gifts!!
