Letter Learning & Spelling With Ice Pens

Do you have icicles outside?  They are perfect for fun with spelling, sight words, or name or letter learning!

I remember when I was a kid we had icicles that could be 5-6 feet long, but now I live in Texas and we actually do not have any icicles outside.  One morning last year, we woke up and saw little 1/2-inch long icicles all over our play set.  But that was only once in the last two years.  As I type this, it is currently 65 degrees at 4:30 in the afternoon--a lovely Houston afternoon!

But my kids love ice!  And I thought they would have fun reviewing their sight words and letters with this little activity.  It is a great sensory activity, gives you a chance to talk about science (melting, solids, and liquids), and it is a wonderful way to practice writing letters and sight words.

If you live somewhere warm like us, just pour about 3/4 cup of water into a ziplock baggie and place it in the freezer.  A few hours later, you'll have an icicle ready to write with!  If it is stuck to the bag, run warm water over the bag until it melts just enough to get the ice out.

Once it is out of the bag, use it to write on construction paper.  The melting ice on construction paper will "write" anything you want!  Of course, you may have to take a break if your fingers get cold!

"Ice writing" is fun for practicing sight words, vocabulary words, spelling, and letter writing!

My kid would love to try this! I always see those perfect icicles on our house and figure there must be something fun to do with them. Great idea!
