Button Christmas Tree Ornaments!

Buttons and Christmas just go together!  And these cute Button Christmas Tree Ornaments are perfect for preschoolers to make and hang!

In addition to being a fun preschool Christmas craft, making these Button Christmas Tree Ornaments is excellent fine motor exercise!  Plus, my favorite craft activities leave lots of room for the kids to create on their own, and not just copy my model.  I love open-ended art!  Art, crafts, and projects that allow children to express their own creativity helps build their confidence and ingenuity!  AND, if you don't want to hang these up, they still make a great Christmas craft and/or gift!

Before I give you the instructions, I will point out a few safety notes:  1- I let my children use low-temperature hot glue guns.  They have used them for years.  If you and/or your children are not comfortable with this, use Elmer's school glue...it works fine, but you have to wait longer for it to dry.  2- Buttons are small.  If your children are likely to eat them, use large pom poms or another decoration.  As my sidebar points out, you are responsible for your children's safety!  :)  Now, on to your own...

Button Christmas Tree Ornaments!

Simple Supplies:

* green craft sticks
* assorted colorful buttons
* optional accessories (we had to get ribbon and paint)
* paperclips or ornament hangers
* glue

Easy How-To:

Note: I presented all the supplies, suggested a design, and let my children make their own Christmas trees.  They basically went in this order:

1- Assemble your tree using the craft sticks and hot glue.

2- Decorate your tree with the buttons, accessories, and glue.

3-  Bend a paperclip (or use a premade ornament hanger) and glue it to the back of your Button Christmas Tree Ornament!

4- Let it dry and hang it up for everyone to see!

Children love to display their work!  Our kiddos were all very pleased with their Button Christmas Trees and were anxious to hang them up on the real Christmas tree as ornaments.

Have you made any ornaments with your preschoolers this year?  What's your favorite kind?  I'd love to know!

Thanks Emma! My 4-year old was thrilled when he found that ghost button in our button bin...that and the spider button were some of his favorites! :)

Fun, practical craft. I have these supplies on hand and I'm always looking for little crafts to do with my grandchildren. I think I'll give these little trees a try. Thanks for the idea.
