Fizzy Flower Sensory Dough!
Fizzy flower sensory dough is perfect for spring and summer sensory science...and it smells absolutely divine!
This dough was super fun to make, play with, and fizz, but I am absolutely in love with how it smells! When we were done, I wanted to keep the mess out just because it smelled so wonderful!
The whole activity took about an hour, and was even more fun because we used fresh flowers from outside! This is a fantastic science/sensory activity that would go great with our Preschool Botany Class!
To get started, let your kiddos pick a few flowers of their choice and pull the petals off:
Add one cup of baking soda and 2 1/2 tablespoons of hand lotion.
Depending on your lotion, you may need more or less than 2 1/2 tablespoons. You want a nice crumbly texture that holds together when you squeeze it. At this point, our kiddos wanted to add more flowers!
And let the sensory exploration begin!
We had "flying snowmen" and all sorts of creations:
When you're done children are done playing with the dough, it's time to break out the fizzing! Cut a lemon in quarters and give each child a quarter lemon to start with. We put a handful of dough at a time in another bin to test the fizz! Then each kiddo squeezed lemon juice onto the dough...this became incredible fine motor exercise! As the lemon hit the dough, our kids were glued:
My eight-year old commented: "It looks like lemons are acidic!" Yep! The citric acid in lemons reacts with baking soda the same way vinegar does...they combine and release carbon dioxide (a gas) which bubbles and looks super fun! If you've followed our blog for long, you know our kids adore fizzing, "exploding" reactions! And the lemons add another fantastic fragrance to the whole mixture!
Of course, once the bubbles and fizzing started, everyone wanted to touch the fizzy mixture again! It even molded into a new squishy dough!
